Palembang Guide
Palembang is one of major fast development city in Indonesia. According to Indonesian Association of Urban Regional Planners survey in 2017, Palembang ranked number 2 as the most livable city index [1]. Located in the western Indonesia, this capital of South Sumatra province becomes the second largest city in Sumatra Island [2]. On next august, Asian Games 2018 will be held in Indonesia. Palembang becomes the host city of this big multi-sport event, along with the Capital city, Jakarta. Expected that there will be a lot of people will come to Palembang to celebrate this event. Here are several basic things you need to know about Palembang, things might appear when people talk about Palembang.
Talking about the structure and geography of the city, Palembang divided by big famous river named Musi River, into 2 regions, northern area called Seberang Ulu and southern area called Seberang Ilir. On 1962, the first bridge on this river was built [3]. This bridge played an important role to connect Seberang Ulu and Seberang Ilir in easier way. The construction of the bridge was funded by the war reparation after the independence of Indonesia. That’s why, this bridge called Ampera, where most citizens believe that this named was acronym from Amanat Penderitaan Rakyat (The mandate of suffering people during war period). What so special about this bridge is the center of the bridge can be vertically-lifted to allow big boat passing under the bridge on Musi River (but it can’t be operated again ever). Now, Ampera become the landmark of the city, where a lot of activities happened there.

As a cultural heritage, Songket is another thing you should know about Palembang. Like another Malay region in general, Songket is a fabric made by traditional hand-woven technique. For Palembang itself, Songket becomes a luxurious textile because of their authentic pattern were made by golden thread. It also made Palembang Songket well-known as “The queen of the fabrics”, the best Songket in Indonesia in term of quality [4]. Nowadays, almost every people can approach to buy them. In Palembang, Songket mostly used for traditional ceremonial. And we can found it easily when attending wedding ceremony because it’s worn as the wedding costume for both groom and bride.
Local food is a must when we talk about some place. Because of Palembang geography that having many rivers, a lot of fish caught provided here. Pempek is a really popular fish product from Palembang in the form of fishcake. Most people believed that this dish was influenced by Chinese. There’re various Pempek based on their shape, such as Ada’an (rounded shape deep-fried one), Lenjer (cylindrical shape), Keriting (curly), Kulit (made with fish skin), Pistel (filled with young/unripe papaya), Kapal Selam (named refer to submarine because of the Big shape filled with egg), Tunu (grilled), Lenggang (grilled with beaten egg), etc. Most of Pempek served by boiled and deep-fried. Locals enjoy eating Pempek with the hot and spicy dipping sauce called Cuko, even some others sipped this Cuko to enrich the delicacy flavor. Pempek can be found easily everywhere in Palembang, along with wide range of price.
